Willunga has one of the region’s most distinctive historic town centres, with early stone cottages, hotels, churches, civic buildings and later railway-related structures. Local stone and slate are defining elements of the town’s architectural character, appearing in walls, chimneys, outbuildings, memorials and other surviving masonry from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Much of the district below the Willunga Escarpment is formed from fine-grained outwash material, commonly with silty or sandy loam surfaces over clay-rich subsoils. These conditions can produce seasonal movement, variable drainage and localised waterlogging, particularly where runoff from higher ground is concentrated around a building.
Open mortar joints, cracked chimney stacks and deteriorating lower wall sections may therefore be symptoms of broader moisture or ground conditions rather than isolated defects.
