Before work begins, the masonry, mortar, coatings and previous repairs must be assessed. Different stone types vary in porosity, hardness, mineral composition and vulnerability to salts, chemicals and physical abrasion.
Replacement mortar must be compatible with the original masonry. Its strength, permeability, colour, aggregate, texture and joint finish all affect the performance and appearance of the restored facade.
Visible deterioration is often linked to water entry, rising damp, failed drainage or salt movement. Restoration must consider the source of moisture rather than simply treating the damaged surface.
Removing mortar, paint or staining without damaging adjacent masonry requires patience, specialist tools and an understanding of how the original materials will respond.
Joint depth, profile, compression, tooling and curing all contribute to the final result. These details are critical when restoring prominent facades where inconsistencies can be immediately visible.
Cracking, mortar failure and surface deterioration may be symptoms of broader issues such as ground movement, poor drainage, incompatible coatings or previous cement repairs. A complete restoration plan must account for these contributing conditions.
